The 2021 Tokyo Game Show (TGS) officially opened on September 30, 2021, running for four days. Due to the pandemic, this year's event centered on online streaming, while also offering offline trial play and displays. Approximately 300 companies and groups from around the world participated, announcing over 100 new titles. The show also hosted the "Japan Game Awards 2021," the game music concert "TOKYO GAME MUSIC FES," and the indie game developer gathering "Sense of Wonder Night."

The Tokyo Game Show is a professional gaming exhibition that began in 1996. Starting in 1997, it was held twice a year (spring and autumn), but changed to an annual event in 2002. TGS is now the largest gaming expo in Asia, second only to E3 in the United States, making it the world's second-largest gaming event. According to organizers, major game companies such as Bandai Namco, Square Enix, Microsoft, Sony Computer Entertainment, KOEI TECMO, SEGA, and Konami participated.
During the event, the "Asia Game Industry Summit" and "Asia Game Trend Seminars" were held to exchange views on Asian market trends, along with various planning activities targeting Asian countries.

This year's TGS also promoted e-sports extensively in Japan, allocating a large area for e-sports. Using the large stage within this area, console and smartphone game titles were introduced, combined with live video streaming, allowing more people to experience the appeal of e-sports.
The VR area introduced last year was renamed the "VR/AR Area" this year, expanding its scope to include AR and MR. Participating companies became more international, with attendees from East Asia, Europe, the Americas, Southeast Asia, Central and South America, and Eastern Europe, as well as new participants from Oceania, the Middle East, and South Asia. The Tokyo Game Show serves as a bridge for business discussions and exchanges among game industry professionals worldwide.
