The Indonesian National Sports Week (PON) concluded successfully on October 15, 2021. This edition, which opened on October 2, was held in Papua for the first time. Despite geographical challenges, the event drew attention to Papua's potential and strengths, conveying a message of national unity and mutual assistance.

Papua excelled in several international-standard facilities. In the provincial capital Jayapura, as well as in Mimika, Merauke, and Jayapura regencies, venues such as shooting ranges, indoor and outdoor hockey fields, aquatic facilities, and cricket grounds were built.

The main venue, Lukas Enembe Stadium, covers 13 hectares and seats about 40,000 spectators, making it one of the best stadiums in the Asia-Pacific region.

This PON brought together over 200 micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) from local Jayapura communities through culinary and handicraft markets around the sports venues. According to a foreign professional large-event company, the market's daily turnover exceeded 80 million Indonesian rupiah, accumulating to 1 billion rupiah by the event's end.

During the PON, the government launched the Papua Tourism app to promote tourist attractions and regional information, covering historical, cultural, and natural tourism, while also serving as an online sales platform for MSMEs.

With the event concluded, Papua Province is ready to welcome more tourists to enjoy the beauty of the land of the birds of paradise.
